The Goal: Control how much of your profile other members can see by using the two privacy settings together — Make my Profile Private and Hide only my email.
Before You Begin:
- Both settings are on the Settings card of your Settings page: open your Profile menu in the upper-right corner of the community and choose Settings.
- This article assumes the site-level setting is enabled to show email addresses. If your site has that turned off, the Hide only my email control will not appear on your Settings page at all. See Site Admin Control of Email Visibility and User Settings for more information.
- As of 1/28/25, all new individuals — as well as those previously added to Community who had not yet logged in — have their profiles set to private by default.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Open your Profile menu in the upper right corner of the community and choose Settings.
- On the Settings card at the top of the page, locate Make my Profile Private and Hide only my email.
- Choose the combination that matches how visible you want to be. The three sections below show exactly what other members see in each case.
If "Make my Profile Private" is Turned On
- Only first name, last name, title, company/school, banner photo, and profile photo will be visible. All other information, including email addresses, is hidden.
- The Hide only my email setting, whether enabled or disabled, does not impact the visibility of the email address when the profile is private.
| NOTE: As of 1/28/25, to respect the privacy and security of personal information, all new individuals (as well as those who were previously added to Community, but had not yet logged in) have their profiles defaulted to be private. |
-
The individual will still appear in the directory, both at a global level as well as within groups they are a member of.

Common Pitfalls
- Turning on "Hide only my email" when your profile is already private has no additional effect. A private profile already hides your email along with everything else.
- Expecting a private profile to remove you from the directory: It does not. You still appear in the global directory and in the directories of any groups you belong to, just with less information shown.
- The "Hide only my email" control is not on your Settings page: Your site has email visibility turned off for everyone. Options a site does not offer are hidden rather than shown greyed out, so an absent control is expected rather than an error.
- Assuming these settings were reset: Your privacy selections carried over unchanged when the Settings page was reorganized into two cards. They are on the Settings card, above Notification Preferences.
