The Goal: By the end of this article, you will know where every personal and notification setting lives on your community Settings page, and how to choose what reaches you in the app and by email.
Before You Begin:
- You must be signed in to your community. These settings apply only to your account and do not affect other members.
- Your options depend on how your site is configured. If your site does not offer a feature, its settings are not shown at all rather than being shown and disabled.
- Moderation notifications are managed by site and group admins. All members can see the setting, but only admins can change it.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Open your Profile menu in the upper-right corner of the community and select Settings.
- Use the Settings card at the top of the page for your personal controls: whether your profile is private, whether other members can see your email address, whether other members can send you messages, which microphone, camera, and speaker you use for calls, and your time zone.
- Scroll to the Notification Preferences card. Read the note at the top of this card: important account and platform information may still reach you even when a notification is switched off here.
Select the In-app tab to choose what notifies you inside the community. Settings are grouped by activity type: Discussion and Social feed (new discussion topics, discussion activity, feed activity, mentions, responses, and likes), Direct messages, Group activity, and Moderation.
- Select the Email tab to choose what arrives in your inbox. This tab covers follow-ups for messages you missed, session reminders, and the daily digest.
For missed message follow-ups, choose how often they are bundled: at most every two hours, daily, or weekly.
- Leave session reminders on if you want two emails per session, one three days before it starts and one 15 minutes before it starts.
- Check the count shown on each tab. It tells you how many notifications you currently have enabled in that channel, so you can confirm your choices at a glance without reopening every group.
Common Pitfalls
- Looking for the daily digest or session reminders on the main Settings card: Both moved to the Email tab of the Notification Preferences card. Your existing selections came with them, so there is nothing to turn back on.
- Direct message settings are not listed: Direct message rows only appear when you allow other members to message you. Turn on that option in the Settings card and the rows return to both tabs.
- Moderation appears switched on and cannot be changed: This is expected. Moderation notifications stay visible to every member, but only site and group admins can adjust them.
- Expecting these settings to silence everything: Account and platform messages that affect your access or the service itself are sent regardless of what you choose here.
