The Symptom: You open your Settings page and a notification option you used to see is no longer there. The most common examples are the daily digest, session reminders, and direct message notifications.
The Root Cause: The Settings page was reorganized into two cards, and notification settings are now sorted into an In-app tab and an Email tab instead of one long list. Nothing was reset and nothing was removed from your account. In most cases the setting simply sits on the other tab. A setting can also be hidden on purpose: direct message rows are hidden when you have turned off messaging, and options your site does not offer are no longer shown as greyed-out rows.
The Fix
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
- Open your Profile menu in the upper right corner of the community and choose Settings.
- Scroll to the Notification Preferences card and select the Email tab. The daily digest, session reminders, and missed message follow-ups all live here now. If you were looking for one of those three, you are done.
- If the missing setting is about direct messages, scroll back to the Settings card and check Allow other users to send me messages. When that is off, direct message rows are hidden from both the In-app and Email tabs. Switch it on, and the rows reappear.
- If direct message settings are still missing after that, ask your site admin to confirm that Messenger is enabled for your site. When a site does not use Messenger, no member sees those settings.
- If the missing setting is Moderation, look again on the In-app tab. It is shown to every member but appears greyed out and switched on unless you are a site or group admin.
- If the setting is on neither tab and does not involve messaging, your site does not offer that feature. Options a site has not enabled are now hidden rather than shown as greyed-out rows, so an absent row is expected behavior rather than an error.
Verification: How to know it worked Look at the count displayed on each tab. It shows how many notifications you currently have enabled in that channel. If the count matches what you expect and you can see the setting you were looking for, your preferences carried over correctly and no further action is needed.
